Whey Protein Dosage

Because whey protein is considered a dietary supplement, there is little information available about the safest and most effective dosage. Whey protein is available in various strengths and purities, so even if there were significant information available about dosing, it would be difficult to establish a consistently safe and effective dose. Therefore, it is reasonable to follow the dosing instructions on your particular whey protein product.

Dosage of Whey Protein: An Introduction

It is difficult to recommend a safe and effective dosage for whey protein. The best doses for whey protein have not been scientifically established yet, as is common with dietary supplements. For some uses (such as an ingredient in baby formula or as a food ingredient), there really isn't a whey protein "dosage," per se.

Reasonable Whey Protein Dosing

Because dietary supplements do not require FDA approval, studies to find the safest and most effective dosages for dietary supplements are rarely performed. Without such studies, only vague "trial and error" information is typically available. Even if good dosing information were available, there may be significant variability of the content, purity, and strength between different brands of the same dietary supplement, making consistently safe and effective dosing difficult. With whey protein, the processing and preparation can significantly affect the content of various compounds, leading to further problems recommending a whey protein dosage.

One study of whey protein to treat cancer used a dose of 30 grams per day. Studies for use in people with HIV or AIDS (to increase weight and increase levels of glutathione, an antioxidant) used doses of 8.4 grams to 84 grams per day.

Because different whey protein supplements may contain different amounts of the active components, it is reasonable to follow the dosing instructions provided on the label of your particular product.
