Who Is It Designed For?

The guidelines for this diet recommend doing the cleanse a few times a year. While it is claimed to help anyone who wants to improve their health, the master cleanse diet is reported to be designed for those who:
  • Have a digestive system that needs rest and cleansing
  • Have acute or chronic conditions
  • Are constantly tired and fatigued
  • Are looking to lose weight and break bad eating habits.
It is recommended that women who are pregnant or nursing not do this diet. Also, before starting this diet, check with your healthcare provider, especially if you have any health conditions.

What's Involved?

The master cleanse diet is basically a juice fast, which is designed to be followed for 3 to 10 days.
The main nourishment that you will consume is a special lemonade drink, which is made from fresh-squeezed lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and pure water. It is recommended to drink 6 to 12 glasses of this concoction each day, with each glass containing around 110 calories in sugar carbohydrates.
This diet also calls for drinking an herbal laxative tea, which you drink at night. The first thing in the morning, you drink a quart of salt water. This combination will result in several liquid bowel movements each day. If you decide to do this cleanse, it is recommended that you should stay close to a toilet. You may also want to stock up on toilet paper as well!
There are basically three phases to the master cleanse diet, which include:
  • Ease-in: This includes three days of slowly removing processed foods from your diet.
  • The lemonade diet: Ten days of drinking the lemonade, laxative tea, and salt water.
  • Ease-out: Three days of slowly eating more complex foods.
When ending the diet, it is recommended that you transition to solid food slowly over a few days. In Stanley Burroughs' version of the diet, the goal was to transition out of this plan to become a raw food vegetarian.
