Is Gluten Making You Sick or Fat?

Can a Gluten-Free Diet Help With Weight Loss?

There is no evidence to suggest that following a gluten-free diet has any significant benefits in the general population. To the contrary, marketed gluten-free foods often lack essential nutrients while having high fat and calorie content, a situation more likely to cause weight gain. For example, a serving of regular pretzels provides 108 calories and 1 gram of fat, while a serving of gluten-free pretzels contains 140 calories and 6 grams of fat.

Individuals who do not have celiac disease should consume whole grains for the proven beneficial effects on health, weight, and disease prevention. More research is needed to confirm any benefits of a gluten-free diet beyond its use for treating celiac disease.
