What Is Orlistat Used For? (Cont.)

Is Orlistat Used in Children?

The prescription version of orlistat is approved for use in overweight children age 12 years and older, but the non-prescription version is approved only for adults. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using orlistat in children. The drug can decrease the absorption of certain vitamins from the diet, which may be of greater concern in growing children.

Is Orlistat Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend orlistat for something other than weight loss. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are no universally accepted off-label orlistat uses.
