Ma huang (ephedra) is chemically similar to amphetamines and works by suppressing the appetite and increasing metabolism. Although ma huang may help with weight loss, it has dangerous and possibly life-threatening complications (such as heart attacks, seizures, or strokes). Because of these safety concerns, ma huang was banned in the United States (but it can still be purchased online from foreign companies or companies making the product illegally).
