Drug Interactions With Ma Huang

Any Other Stimulants
Do not combine ma huang with any other stimulant. Ma huang contains ephedrine and other stimulants, which can be dangerous when taken with other stimulants.
Some of the stimulants and many nasal decongestants are chemically related. Taking them together may increase the risk of side effects. Do not take ma huang with a decongestant.
Ma huang may increase your blood sugar, which can make diabetes medications less effective. Do not take ma huang with a diabetes medication.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Combining an MAOI with ma huang can lead to life-threatening reactions. If you take an MAOI, do not take any products that contain ma huang.
Theoretically, combining ma huang with a QT-prolonging medication could increase the risk of QT prolongation, a very dangerous irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia).
Ma huang can make seizure medications less effective. Do not take ma huang if you take any seizure medications.
Theophylline (Uniphyl, Theocron, TheoCap, Theo-24, Elixophyllin)
Combining ma huang with theophylline could lead to serious side effects. Do not use ma huang with theophylline.
