Although not much is known about breastfeeding and acai, the product is generally considered safe for nursing mothers. The full risks of using acai products while breastfeeding are not known because few human studies have been done. If you are interested in taking this product but are concerned about doing so while breastfeeding, you can try these products after your child has been weaned.
Is Acai Safe While Breastfeeding? There is no scientific information to suggest that acai is safe for use during breastfeeding, but there is also no reason to suspect that it would cause any problems. Whether you should take acai while breastfeeding is, of course, a personal decision only you can make. It will depend on your comfort level with supplements or "functional foods" that have not been proven safe in breastfeeding women, your particular beliefs about supplements and functional foods, and the advice of your healthcare provider.
Because of all the media attention and other hype surrounding the possible benefits of acai as a "superfood," it is possible to feel as though you are doing yourself (and your baby) a disservice by not taking the product. It may be helpful to understand that the benefits are probably overstated (see Acai Berry Research). If you are interested in taking acai but are at all concerned about doing so while breastfeeding, remember that you will have plenty of time to try acai after your child has been weaned.
You should talk with your healthcare provider about acai and breastfeeding. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
