Uses for Hoodia

Hoodia is an herbal supplement often used as a weight loss product. Currently, the active ingredient in it is believed to be a compound known as p57. It has been speculated that p57 works in the brain to give people a sense of being full, which helps to suppress the appetite.

However, just because the supplement is marketed for weight loss does not mean that it actually works. In fact, no published research studies have shown these uses for hoodia to be effective, and no studies have been performed and published to show that it is safe. Therefore, while individual people may report success with these products, this does not scientifically demonstrate the effectiveness of various hoodia uses.

Phytopharm (a well-respected manufacturer of supplements) claims to have conducted a study that shows hoodia to be effective. This study was "double blind," which means that hoodia was compared to a placebo, and neither the subjects of the study nor the researchers knew who received hoodia and who received the placebo. In this study, the people taking hoodia decreased their calorie intake and their body fat. However, this study was never published and is, therefore, of little value.
