If diabetes medications, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, or other stimulants are combined with guarana, interactions can potentially occur. Many medicines can increase the level of caffeine in your blood, which could lead to dangerous side effects. To help reduce your risk of developing guarana interactions, talk to your healthcare provider if you are taking other medications.
Guarana can potentially interact with a few other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to guarana interactions include:
- Any other stimulants, including caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines, and many other weight loss products
- Cimetidine (Tagamet®)
- Clozapine (Clozaril®)
- Diabetes medications
- Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as:
- Fluvoxamine (Luvox®)
- Mexiletine (Mexitil®)
- Theophylline (Uniphyl®, Theocron®, TheoCap®, Theo-24®, Elixophyllin®).
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when guarana is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
