GABA Dosage

There is no standard GABA dosage, as no studies have been done on the supplement to determine the most effective and safest amount. Because very little information is available to guide you in choosing an appropriate dose, it is reasonable to follow the directions on the label of your particular GABA product. Also, it is important to choose a product made by a reputable manufacturer.

An Introduction to Dosing With GABA

As is the case with many dietary supplements, there is no clearly established safe and effective dose for GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) at this time. In fact, there is not even a "typical" dosage that can be recommended.

What Is a Reasonable GABA Dosage?

There are a few different reasons why it is difficult to recommend a GABA dose. Unlike prescription or nonprescription drugs, there is no standard recommended dose for dietary supplements, including GABA. In addition, because GABA supplementation has been studied very little in humans, there is no real data available to support any particular amount as either safe or effective.

Because there is little, high-quality information about dosing with GABA, it is probably a good idea to follow the instructions on the label of your particular product.

General Information on Your GABA Dose

Some considerations for people taking GABA include the following:

  • If you decide to take a GABA supplement, it is important to choose a trustworthy manufacturer (supplements are not regulated as closely as drugs). Your pharmacist is a good source for information about which manufacturers are most reliable.

  • If you have any chronic health problems or take any prescription medications, it is a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking GABA.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your GABA dose, please talk with your healthcare provider.
