Bitter Orange Uses

A number of conditions can be treated with bitter orange. Uses of the supplement may include the treatment of indigestion or heartburn, chronic fatigue, and high cholesterol. However, it is most commonly used as a weight-loss aid.

What Is Bitter Orange Used For?

Bitter orange is a citrus fruit that is commonly used in herbal supplements. It is often used for weight loss, although it has been used for a wide variety of conditions, such as:

Bitter orange is also sometimes applied to the skin to treat a variety of conditions (such as fungal infections). Interestingly, although bitter orange is usually promoted as a weight-loss aid, it was historically used as an appetite stimulant (to help people gain weight).

With obesity on the rise (see Obesity Statistics), many people are searching for "quick fixes" to help with weight loss. Although the ideal weight-loss plans focus on gradual weight loss by healthy eating and increased exercise (see How to Lose Weight), many people have difficulty following such plans (or feel they need extra assistance in their efforts). Before turning to drastic measures such as weight-loss surgery, many people consider using weight-loss pills, especially if they have unsuccessfully tried to control their obesity (and exercise and diet have been ineffective).

Bitter orange is commonly used as an ephedra replacement in weight-loss supplements, since ephedra has been banned for safety concerns. It is important to understand that there is no evidence that bitter orange is any less dangerous than ephedra.
