Can Breastfeeding Women Take Belviq?

More Information on Belviq and Breastfeeding

There is very little information available about Belviq and breastfeeding. The drug has not been studied in breastfeeding women or animals. Therefore, it is unknown whether the medicine passes through breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing infant.

Although this lack of information is certainly frustrating, it is important to understand that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as this would usually expose an infant who will not directly benefit from the medication to possible risks.

Perhaps most importantly, women who are breastfeeding should generally not try to lose weight. Breastfeeding is a time of increased caloric need. It is important to eat a well-balanced diet while you are nursing. If you are breastfeeding and are overweight or obese, talk to your healthcare provider about how many calories you should consume during this period.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Belviq use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
