Acai Drug Interactions

The acai berry is an antioxidant-rich fruit claimed to be a "superfood." Although there are no clearly established drug interactions with acai, theoretically, it is possible that acai could interact with chemotherapy medications. It is thought that antioxidants, such as are found in acai, may reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer. If you are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy treatments, do not take acai without first checking with your oncologist.

It is important to understand that the lack of known acai drug interactions may simply reflect the fact that this product has been studied very little in humans. There may be drug interactions that are not currently known at this time. For this reason, it is important to mention acai when your healthcare provider asks about medications and supplements you take.
